The Indian Air Force was established on 8 October 1932 in British India as an auxiliary air force of the Royal Indian Air Force Course. The enactment of the Indian Air Force Act 1932 stipulated out their auxiliary status and enforced the adoption of the Royal Air Force uniforms, badges, brevets and insignia.

The Indian Air Force (IAF) is the aerial warfare branch of the Indian Defense Forces. The IAF is the fourth-largest air power in the world and the most-improved in Asia, holding the second-most modern aircraft of any air power in the world. The IAF is projected to have a strength of over 80,000 personnel in 2032.

The Indian Air Force Course is ranked third in the order of battle of the Indian Armed Forces and the Indian Army is ranked first in the order of battle .The Indian Air Force course is one of the oldest air forces in the world, having been formed in 1932. Currently, the IAF has close to 70,000 active personnel, making it the largest air force in the Asia-Pacific region.

The IAF operates the Surya Kiri, Sukhoi Su-30MKI, Jaguar (Pt2), MiG-29, Jaguar (Pt3), Advanced Trainer Aircraft (Ati), Advanced Light Helicopter (Alh), Advanced Medium Helicopter (Amh), and the Advanced Technology Surgical Helicopter (Athel) aircraft. The IAF is also the first air force to operate the stealth fighter, the Sukhoi Su-30MKI, in large numbers

How to Join Indian Air Force After 12th

How to join Indian Air Force via Air Force Common Admission Test (AFCAT)

Any graduate or engineer can enter the Indian Air force through the AFCAT exam conducted in the flying branch.

  • Age: Candidates aspiring to join the Air force through AFCAT exams must be between the age of 20 to 24 years.
  • Nationality: Indian 
  • Marital status: Single.
  • Qualification: Must be a Graduate from a recognised institution with at least 60% marks or a similar degree with a minimum of 60% marks or equivalent. Final year students are also eligible to apply for the exams 
  • Those who have cleared section A and B examination of Associate Membership of Institute Engineers or Aeronautical Society of India can also apply .

Institute for Indian Airforce:-

1.Air Force Technical College: On completion of 22 weeks of initial training conducted at Air Force Academy. Thereafter, the remaining 52 weeks of training of engineering Officers is conducted at Air Force Technical College   (AFTC), Bangalore.

The training at AFTC is divided into two terms of 24 weeks each separated by a term break. The training includes work in electronic and propulsion labs, specialization involving visits to R & D establishments, aviation, electronic industries and front line field units to facilitate assimilation.

A balance is maintained between theoretical knowledge and hands-on experience on simulated as well as actual equipment to augment the technical skills.

2.Air Force Administrative College: Air Force Administrative College (AFAC), located at Coimbatore, is one of the oldest training establishments of the Indian Air Force.

It has been set up exclusively for conducting training programs for in-service officers of the Indian Air Force Course, Navy and Army as well as officers of friendly foreign countries. Various courses conducted for in service officers are:

  • Basic Air Staff Course : Officers (BASCO)
  • Intermediate Air Staff Course : Officers (ISCO)
  • Basic Professional Knowledge Course : Officers (BPKC)
  • Advances Professional Knowledge Course : Officers (APKC)
